Life Recorded, a cancer storytelling resource through Roswell Park, sat down with me to talk about brain cancer. We discuss the importance of advocacy, and the very hard road of being a caregiver.
As we come up on the 3rd anniversary of Mike’s death, it has me reflecting on how loss changes us–we are different than we were before. Losing a spouse changes who you are. A little sadder, a little less whole, but also wiser.
Before Mike got sick I was content, safe, balanced, whole. I felt full and at peace with life in general. That changes when a spouse dies. I miss being that happy in life, that content. I miss that part of me. The journey through loss is not a short road and doesn’t heal quickly. But it does soften with time and even though we are not the person we were before their illness/death, we are stronger, wiser and can see life in a whole new way. We understand it’s fragility more deeply, we are willing to not wait for life to happen but to embrace it as it is unfolding. And, we learn how to find the joy within the story we are living.
