Season 5 Ep. 1: “The Two C’s in Neuro-Oncology Care, Compassion & Creativity” with Guests Dr.’s Sengupta & Higgins

SEASON 5 Ep 1 (49th episode in total): “The two c’s in neuro-oncology care, compassion and creativity” with guests Dr.’s Sengupta and Higgins.

Compassion and creativity are vitally important these days in cancer care. The old rule of thumb, especially in brain cancer, of standard of care just isn’t enough anymore. Patients and families need a voice, and need to know that they are heard when asking questions about clinical trials, supplements, holistic options, and cross-collaboration across neuro-oncology care.

Enter Dr. Soma Sengupta and Dr. Dominique Higgins of UNC School of Medicine in North Carolina.

Dr. Soma Sengupta, MD, Ph.D., MBA, FRCP, FANA, FAAN is a board-certified neurologist, a fellowship-trained, sub-specialty board-certified neuro-oncologist, and is fellowship-trained in integrative medicine. She is a physician-scientist, clinical trialist specializing in brain tumor treatment and researcher with over 90 publications on clinical trials, and healthcare policy.

Dr. Sengupta’s work goes beyond oncology care. She believes in a holistic approach and cross-collaboration when treating brain cancer patients. She understands that if we are to truly help patients live past five years then we need to work across hospitals, across state lines, and in a creative problem-solving environment. To her, the patient’s voice is the only voice that matters.

Dr. Sengupta has also authored a book called Boo Boo’s and Butterflies about childhood cancer. See the link below. Any proceeds from sales for the book will be donated to cancer charity.

Alongside her is skilled neurosurgeon Dr. Dominique Higgins, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery and Director of Adult Neurosurgical Oncology at UNC School of Medicine, specializing in the treatment of brain tumors.

I sit down with our guests to discuss the novel way they are elevating patient voices, some of the important clinical trials that they are participating in, and what motivates them to do the work they do.
